Employee Spotlight – Sunjay Kalsi
Welcome to our Employee Spotlight series, which showcases the talented individuals that make up our amazing team here at FOD Mobility Group. Each month we provide insights into their role and what they get up to in their downtime. Our latest post features iOS Developer, Sunjay Kalsi.
What is your position and how long have you worked at FOD Mobility Group?
I’m an iOS Developer in the tech team, working on our market-leading Mobilleo MaaS platform. I joined FOD back in August 2021.
What does your job role entail?
My key focus is the ongoing development of the native iOS version of the Mobilleo MaaS platform. My job mainly entails taking the functionality and designs from the UX/UI team, implementing them into native iOS code and ensuring Mobilleo is bug-free and operational.
What projects are you currently working on?
Recently I’ve been working on development of the process flow for the Car Club booking feature within Mobilleo. This includes how each user moves from reserving their vehicle via the Car Club feature, through to when they actually get into the car and start their journey.
What are your goals within the next 12 months?
This year I want to level up my skill set and become a solid mid-level iOS developer. The technologies I would like to focus on are Swift UI and levelling up to UI-Kit knowledge as well.
What do you find most rewarding about your role?
What I find most rewarding about my role is that there is so much new stuff to learn. Programming is not really a job, it’s more a lifestyle which I love. I enjoy the technical aspect and being precise with my work.
What do you enjoy most about working at FOD Mobility Group?
I find the concept of Mobility as a Service (Maas) interesting and how it is improving the way we travel from one place to another using a single application. Our long-term vision is to expand Mobilleo to become the world’s first truly global MaaS platform and I’m excited to be a part of that. I love being able to see and experience the work I’ve achieved when we push each new release to the app store.
What advice would you give to someone looking to join the business?
My advice would be to show your enthusiasm, showcase what you can offer and bring your A-Game.
What is the best career lesson you’ve learned to date?
The best careers advice I have read is summed up in this quote by Paul Hudson. ‘Programming is an art – don’t spend all your time sharpening your pencil when you should be drawing’. This is something that really hits home and resonates with me as there is a time to be studying your craft and reading books but ultimately I think the majority of your time as a dev needs to be hands-on programming.
What things do you enjoy outside of work?
Outside of work, my hobbies are pretty typical for a developer. I enjoy online gaming with my mates, which is always good fun and thankfully lockdown didn’t really impact that at all. I go to the gym regularly with my wife, which is a mutual hobby we share.
What three words best describe you as a person?
Thoughtful, tenacious and meticulous!
What did you want to be when you grew up and why?
My dream job when I was younger was to be a train driver! I’ve never really shown much interest in it since then so it must have been something I latched onto as a child!
Who would you most like to meet and why?
I would like to meet F1 champion Lewis Hamilton. I’m a big fan of his, especially when it comes to promoting equality outside of his sport. I saw him complete his first test drive for McLaren back in 2007 and have followed his progress ever since.
Where is your favourite holiday destination?
My favourite holiday destination has to be Mauritius. I went there with my wife for our honeymoon and it was a once in a lifetime holiday. It was very luxurious and an amazing destination, so if I ever win the lottery that would probably where I would want to go again.
What are your three all-time favourite songs?
The first one would be ‘Everlong’ by the Foo Fighters. My next one is ‘The Chain’ by Fleetwood Mac, which is quite close to my heart. The last one would have to be ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen which is the best song of all time as it doesn’t age!
